Hi, I hope I got to the right place. My Finnish is unfortunately almost nonexistant, so it is not so easy to navigate here :/

I have been experiencing some packet loss and jitter lately. And I was wondering it I could get a firmware update for the Thomson TG789vn as a first step in trying to fix this. It is currently running Software Release: 8.8.B.A

If you need more information, I will of course do my best to provide it.
Packet lost... are you reset / restart your Thompson router? Maybe reboot / reset can fix your network connection.

Could you change your DNS server? If Sonera DNS server failure -> packet lost...

Manual for DNS server change: https://developers.google.com/speed/pub ... docs/using

(sorry my bad English)
Hi,

I have already tried restarting the router - it has made no difference. I have also tried to use the Google public DNS servers 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4 with the same result.

I can see both the packet loss and jitter in tools or just by doing simple stuff like pinging google.com - if I do so there will be one of the four pings timed out in like every two or three attempts.

I guess it is easier to see jitter from pinging for instance facebook.com then I regularly get 3 results of 130 ms. and one of 340 ms.

I tried the test on pingtest.net and that regularly shows 2% or more packet loss and 2-26 ms. jitter.

It might not seem like a lot but I can feel it when just surfing the net in a browser. Some pages will randomly lag where they used to be really fast responding.

If you have any other suggestions I could try I would be really grateful.
Maybe your need waiting tomorrow, Sonera Support can help you better.
Hi Haugen!

I couldn't find any specific reason which could cause this when i checked your connection. I forwarded your request for firmware update.
Hi Joonas,
Thanks for the firmware update.

It seems to not have helped, though :(

I did a quick batch of tests via pingtest.net and unfortunately it seems the packetloss and jitter is still there. Here are my first 6 results on 2 different servers:

Do you have any suggestions for what I could do to try to fix this?
Hi Haugen!

Have you tried to test it straight from the ethernet socket on the wall without Thomson?
Hi again,

I did a little cross testing:
Did the same test as yesterday on the Finnish server - it seems the packet loss and the jitter isn't as high as yesterday via the router:
http://www.pingtest.net/result/100633127.png
http://www.pingtest.net/result/100633169.png
http://www.pingtest.net/result/100633221.png

Then I tried bypassing the router - connecting straight to the wall socket:
http://www.pingtest.net/result/100633473.png
http://www.pingtest.net/result/100633530.png
http://www.pingtest.net/result/100633572.png

Then connecting via the same Ethernet cable as the router uses (it is a bit distant from the socket):
http://www.pingtest.net/result/100633692.png
http://www.pingtest.net/result/100633744.png
http://www.pingtest.net/result/100633784.png

Then again after reconnecting the router:

http://www.pingtest.net/result/100634260.png
http://www.pingtest.net/result/100634323.png

So while the jitter and packet loss was not nearly as high as when I tested yesterday, without using the router it only appeared at all on a single of the tests?
Hi Haugen!

It seems that somehow the router causes this problem. And it only appeared once with the longer ethernet cable? Have you tried to crosstest the cables with the router? If the problem won't solve, i sugguest you to contact our technical services by phone. Number is 0206 9 0101 at the beginning of the call press 3 to get English menu. We are open 8 - 20 on weekdays.
